Google Places Optimisation
Google Places is basically Google local results, displayed on a map. Registering your business location is free and can be done here. Keep in mind though, as with all things Google, there are some bits and tricks that can be employed for better results.
One thing to do is use category names that people might either search more or are more targeted, so instead of using 'carpentry services', go for 'wardrobe repairs' or 'custom furniture' and the likes.
Another tip would be to use several locations so you cover more ground - for example, if you have more than one location, input them all, if you have a workshop and an office, do the same.
To increase your rank in Google Places results, you need to utilize the other Google products, like the advanced Google Maps options, Google Base and a plethora of other Google web based services (see the whole list here) that can enhance your chances of ranking on top for a wider area. There is also a possibility to add map results to Adwords ads.
